Managing Director of Corporate Security & Chief Security Officer, American Airlines
Gary Tomasulo is the Managing Director of Corporate Security and Chief Security Officer for American Airlines, the largest airline in the world. In this role, he leads the airline’s corporate security team to include the relationship with industry and all federal agencies focused on security. His responsibilities include: the airline’s domestic and international security programs; investigations; fraud and revenue protection; crew and operations security; and regulatory compliance and border security. Tomasulo represents American Airlines security-related interests and priorities at the local, state, federal, and international levels. He also leads American’s security and related policy development and advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and at the White House.
In May 2019 Tomasulo retired from the Coast Guard after 28 years of service to join American Airlines. During his Coast Guard career Tomasulo served in a variety of leadership roles in policy, operational and legal assignments focused on national security issues. Of note he held commands both afloat and ashore.
Prior to joining American, Tomasulo served at the National Security Council in the White House as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Border and Transportation Security. Tomasulo led a team that was responsible for coordinating the Administration’s policy on transportation security, including aviation; watchlisting, screening, identity intelligence, and biometrics; combatting terrorist travel; United States border security; and immigration and visa security. He also served on the National Security Council as a Director in Western Hemisphere Affairs during the Bush and Obama Administrations. Earlier in his career Tomasulo served as a Foreign Policy and Trade Advisor to U.S. Senator Mike DeWine from Ohio.
Tomasulo is a council member of State Department’s Overseas Advisory Council, the Chair of oneworld security group and the Vice-Chair of Airlines for America (A4A) Security Council. He is also an active member of the International Security Management Association (ISMA), International Air Transport Security Advisory Council (IATA), Airlines for America (A4A) Passenger Facilitation Council, and the Domestic Security Alliance Council (DSAC).
Tomasulo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from the United States Coast Guard Academy, a Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management.
